Ritual of the Thunder Moon
Southeast UU Summer Institute
July 20, 2005
by Shining Spirits

(These words are spoken at gathering place,
prior to processional.)

HPS: Be ye far from us, O ye profane,
for we are about to invoke the power
of the goddess and the god.
     Enter their temple
with clean hands and a pure heart,
lest ye defile the source of life.
(Adapted from Dione Fortune, Sea Priestess)

(HPS leads the processional and HP follows group,
each carrying a candle. At entrance to the circle the
cauldron keeper wafts non- incense with feather, or
wafts an unlit sage smudge, for cleansing.)

Processional chant:

Goddess of the Moon, of Thunder
Guide us on this night of wonder.

(When all are assembled in the Circle, HP & HPS place
their candles on the alter.)

HP: Be it known that the ritual is about to begin.
Let none be here but of their own free will.
We invite you to join us and
     we welcome you here.

HPS: You have not arrived here by chance.
You have put yourself on this Path long ago.
We shall walk some of it together and rejoice.
We first began in past sorrows, in past lives.
We were of the Wicca, gazing at the stars,
     feeling deep unnamed secrets;
     touching the Earth in joy and sensing life within;
seeing birth and knowing that it was a miracle,
     a Mystery, a joy;
     being still in the forest,
     being warm in the water...
We are all lights, and we follow the Path
through the God and the Goddess,
     by all Their names,
and in growing, we grow in brightness,
following the cycles of Sun and Moon,
     and glowing in Divine Radiance.

HP/HPS: And now, let us begin.

(HPS rings bell three times.)

Casting of the Circle:

HP: By the air that is her breath
     and the fire that is her bright spirit;
By the water that is her living womb
and the earth that is her body,
     We shall cast a Circle
and make this place sacred and apart.

(HPS casts Circle with wand.)

Neath thunder moon we cleanse this place.
   We sanctify our Sacred Space.

(HP takes up athame and casts.)

Beneath the thunder moon this hour
We fill our Circle with your power.

(After HP returns to alter. HPS takes up censer or
cauldron of incense and proceeds around Circle.)

North and South and East and West.
All by Mother Earth are blest.

(HP rings chime.)

       The Circle is cast!
       The Bell is rung,
       The Candles are lit,
       The Chant is sung.
       The Book is opened,
       The Altar is set,
       The Cauldron is stirred,
       The Group is met.
       We now proclaim to everyone
       That our Ritual has begun.

(HP taps altar three times with Athame)

HP: By her sweet breath which is air,
By the fire, her spirit fair,
By water which fills her place of birth,
And by her body, our sacred Earth.
By these names, our quarters call,
May the Spirits join us all.

HP: Beginning in the East

(Calling the Directions: With athames, wands, or
hands raised, all draw invoking pentagram, starting
from the top, then down to left.)

(East Caller holds candle & yellow drape. He/she walks
deosil to alter while
others shake rattles, and says:)

Spirit of the East, of Air,
Be with us and hear our prayer.
As Air is charged before the rain,
Let that charge be not in vain.

HP: South
(Places drape & candle on alter and returns to place
as South Caller walks to alter with rattles going.)

Spirit of the South, of Fire,
Join with us is our desire.
   Lightening be our Fire tonight,
Painting the Earth with your light.

(Places drape & candle on alter and returns to place
as West Caller walks to alter with rattles going.)

HP: West
Spirit of the West, of Water,
   Come to us, Creator-Daughter.
We honor now the rain and storm
As sights, like clouds, form and reform.

(Places drape & candle on alter and returns to place as
North Caller walks to alter with rattles going.)

HP: North
Spirit of the North, of Earth,
Be a part of our rebirth.
A storm within our spirit grows
To be released just as we chose.

(Places drape & candle on alter and returns to
place with rattles.)

HP: Good spirits of directions bright
Our thanks that you are here tonight.

HPS: In no way may these spells reverse,
or place upon us any curse.

(The HPS stands in front of the altar, assumes the Goddess
position [arms crossed, head bowed]. HP kneels in front of her,
draws a pentacle and invokes.)

HP: I invoke and beseech Thee,
O mighty Mother of all Life and Fertility.
By seed and root, by stem and bud,
by leaf and flower, by fruit and gourd,
      by Life and Love,
I call upon thee to descend, gracious Goddess,
into the body of thy High Priestess, Shining Spirits.
      See with her eyes,
      speak with her voice,
      kiss with her lips,
      that your hidden children
      may receive your wisdom.
Now listen to the words of the Great Mother
who was of old also called,
      Isis, Astarte, Diana - Hecate,
      Demeter, Kali, Inanna.

(HP steps aside.)

HPS: We are between the worlds,
        Beneath the Thunder Moon,
        Beyond the bounds of time,
        Where day and night,
        Birth and death,
        Joy and sorrow,
        Meet as one.

I invite and invoke my Consort the God
to be present in your High Priest, Shanddaramon.

(HP steps beside HPS.)

HP/HPS: May you all be here in peace and love.
          We bid you welcome.

HPS: (Charge of the Star Goddess, Starhawk version)

I who am the beauty of the green earth
and the white moon among the stars
and the mysteries of the waters..
I call upon your soul to arise and come unto me.
For I am the soul of nature
that gives life to the universe.
   From Me all things proceed
and unto Me they must return.
Let My worship be in the heart that rejoices,
   for behold --
all acts of love and pleasure are My rituals.
Let there be beauty and strength,
   power and compassion,
   honor and humility,
   mirth and reverence within you.
And you who seek to know Me,
know that your seeking and yearning
   will avail you not,
   unless you know the Mystery:
For if that which you seek,
   you find not within yourself,
you will never find it without.
   For behold,
I have been with you from the beginning,
and I am that which is attained
   at the end of desire.

HP: (Call of the God, Scott Cunningham)

I am the radiant King of the Heavens,
   flooding the earth with warmth
and encouraging the hidden seed of creation
   to burst forth into manifestation.
   I lift my shining spear
to light the lives of all beings
and daily pour forth my gold upon the Earth,
putting to flight the powers of darkness.
I am master of the beasts wild and free.
I run with the swift stag
and soar as a sacred falcon
   against the shimmering sky.
The ancient woods and wild places
   emanate my powers,
and the birds of the air sing of my sanctity.
I am also the last harvest,
   offering up grain and fruits
   beneath the sickle of time
so that all may be nourished.
   For without planting,
   there can be no harvest;
   without winter, no spring.
Worship me as the thousand-named Sun of creation,
the spirit of the horned stag in the wild,
   the endless harvest.
See in the yearly cycle of festivals,
my birth, death and rebirth --
and know that such is the destiny of all creation.
I am the spark of life, the radiant Sun,
the giver of peace and rest,
and I send my rays of blessing
to warm the hearts and strengthen the minds of all.

HPS: We have come together in this sacred place.
We are each here on a spiritual journey.
       We join together now
to ask the Goddess and the God
       for guidance on that journey.

HP: The Thunder Moon
is a view of our life's path.
    Thunder storms are about
    destruction and change and renewal.
    The lightening burns away
    what is no longer needed,
in order to make a place for new growth.
    The violence of the winds
    rips and destroys,
    bringing more change.
    The drenching rains
support the next cycle of life.
    The thunder storm tells us
that there are times to let go,
and times to seek new beginnings.

HPS: Here in our circle
     we shall pause
to look at ourselves and at our lives,
to see if there is a part of our selves
we would burn in that lightening,
would cast into that violent wind,
to let it be gone from us,
that newness of spirit may come forth
     with the healing rains.

HP: Here in our circle
    we shall pause
to look at events which happen to us,
events which are beyond our control,
but which enter and change our lives.
These, too, must be cast into the storm
that we may be free of them.

HPS: The journey we take tonight
may be about change within ourselves.
Or it may be about change
which has been forced upon us.
We may feel the need to change.
Or we may feel the need to adapt to the change
which has come, unbidden, into our lives.

HP: As a focus for that part of our journey,
we have before us some Tarot cards.

(HPS picks up each suit and fans the cards to show
those in the Circle while the HP speaks.)

We have the suit of wands,
   symbolizing the thunder and lightening,
and also the fires of passion and creativity.
And we have the suit of cups,
   symbolizing the rain and water,
and also our emotions and our intuitive selves.

(HPS shuffles the decks together 3 times. HP cuts deck
into 3 piles. HPS joins them into one deck and strews
them on the tray.)

HP: The cards shall speak to you.
Each of you may draw one card.
It will hold a message for you.

HPS: As you look at your card,
look beyond what is written there.
     Look to the imagery.
Seek the message that the card brings to you.
     The message may tell you
what you need to cast aside.
It may warn of something to avoid.
It may tell you what renewal you shall seek
or something toward which you shall strive.
The card may tell you of a path to follow
in adjusting to unwelcome events in your life.
You may share your card with others later
     and discuss its possibilities.
     Remember, though,
that the message is yours alone,
and you alone will truly know.

(As the HPS moves her wand over the tray of cards, HP speaks:)

HP: Lord and Lady now we seek
to hear your message in cards that speak.
May each card tell a message true
that we may know what is best to do.

HPS: I invite each of you now
to come forward and draw a card.
       As we draw our cards,
       let us, in silence,
       focus upon our card,
       and upon change and renewal,
       adaptation and acceptance.

(After all have drawn their cards and after a moment of silence--)

HPS: The Lady and Lord have heard your need.
Your answer will come with due speed.
Insure that the magick will come true
By helping it happen in all that you do.
An it harm none, do what thou will.
The Wiccan Rede you must fulfill.

HP: Thunder Moon we ask, this hour,
Grant us now your focused power.
The spell is cast; our paths we see,
Let magick reign; so mote it be!

(HP takes up votive candle and HPS takes up bowl of water.
They speak their chant first to entire group, then move
around the circle deosil. At each individual HP cleanses
with candle and HPS anoints with water, saying:)

HP: She is the thunder; She is the rain.

HPS: You are the Earth; Refreshed again.

(After they have gone around the circle and have returned
to the alter, returning candle and bowl, the entire group
repeats the chant with energy several times, changing
"you are" to "we are.")

She is the thunder; She is the rain.
We are the Earth; Refreshed again.

HP: And now we all kneel to touch the Earth and
ground the excess of the energy we have raised.

(Cakes and ale are brought out. The bell is rung three times.
HP takes up basket of cakes which HPS touches with wand.)

HP: May we now and ever know
All to the Lord and Lady we owe.
They sustain us through the good and bad
Our thanks to them for all we’ve had.

(HPS picks up one cake and crumbles it to the ground saying:)

HPS: Lady and Lord, our thanks to you.
We give ye back what is your due.

(Cakes are distributed, and all eat.)

HPS: Now feast we together one and all.
May blessings on every one befall.
Food for your bodies, good women and men,
Bright blessings to you and all of your kin.
We thank Lord and Lady, for we have a lot.
May we always be mindful of those who have naught,
And share what we have with all of the rest.
Thanks to you, Lord and Lady, for we have been blest.

(The HP then places his athame in the HPS goblet.)

HP: Athame to chalice makes them one,
Goddess of Moon and God of the Sun.
A symbol we have for the Great Rite.
May its magic continue by day and by night.
     Fertility thus we celebrate
as goddess and god, as mate to mate.

HP & HPS together:
     Thus symbolically we unite
For we are the god and the goddess tonight.

(HP pours a small amount of ale into HPS' chalice, and
pours a little onto the earth. Both salute the Gods, drink,
and distribute ale around Circle.)

HPS: Let the fruits of union promote all life.
May we do our best to banish strife.
May we all be fruitful each in our own way.
as we celebrate life here today.

HP & HPS: Eat, drink, and be happy, as happy as we.
Share and give thanks. So mote it be.

HPS: We came together in a spirit of love
      meeting beneath the sky above.
As we go forth, this love we will share
with others, thus making them more aware.

HP: My Lady, our thanks to you tonight
for sharing this time ’neath the moon so bright.
Our thanks for your guidance now we give
and our thanks for teaching us how to live.
May we always live peaceably and always love.

(HPS steps back against the altar and bows her head as the
goddess departs from her. HP steps to side.)

HPS: My Lord, our thanks to you tonight
for sharing this time ’neath the moon so bright.
Our thanks for your guidance now we give
and our thanks for teaching us how to live.
May we always live peaceably and always love.

(HP bows, pauses as the god departs from him, and then
returns to side of HPS.)

(Dismissing the Quarters: With athame raised, all draw
banishing pentagrams, starting from the bottom left
and moving up.)

HP: Let us now dismiss the Quarters, starting with the North.

   Spirit of the North,
Powers of Earth, we thank you
   For joining our circle
on this night of the thunder moon.
We bid you well as you depart.
May there be peace between us.

HP: West

   Spirit of the West,
Powers of Water, we thank you
   For joining our circle
on this night of the thunder moon.
We bid you well as you depart.
May there be peace between us.

HP: South

   Spirit of the South,
Powers of Fire, we thank you
   For joining our circle
on this night of the thunder moon.
We bid you well as you depart.
May there be peace between us.

HP: East

   Spirit of the East,
Powers of Air, we thank you
   For joining our circle
on this night of the thunder moon.
We bid you well as you depart.
May there be peace between us.

The light of the Maiden surrounds you.
The love of the Mother enfolds you.
The wisdom of the Crone flows through you.
Wherever you are, the Goddess is.
   And all is well.

(Silently the HPS takes up her wand and with wand raised opens
the circle by walking widdershens around the circle.)

HP & HPS Together:
The Circle is open but unbroken,
May the Peace of the Goddess,
And the Strength of the God,
   Be ever in your hearts.
   Merry Meet and Merry Part,
   And Merry Meet Again.

HP: It is a part of my tradition
that we hug one another following a Circle.
