Thursday, November 13, 2003, Starhawk held an outdoor rally in Fort Lauderdale to raise more than a little magic concerning the Free Trade of the Americas (FTAA) meeting in Miami the following week.

Gathering at 7:30 PM at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Fort Lauderdale, a bonfire was lit, and Starhawk told us something of the international forces at work. Following the presentation, a circle was cast and some energy raised. Starhawk is traveling from Tallahassee, through Gainesville and St. Petersburg and onto Miami raising awareness about FTAA.

Starhawk is a veteran of progressive movements and deeply committed to bringing the techniques and creative power of spirituality to political activism. She travels internationally teaching magic, the tools of ritual, and the skills of activism.

FTAA, or, Free Trade in the Americas, is the ongoing effort to unite the economies of the Americas into a single free trade area. Impact will extend to environmental protections, the allocation of skilled jobs, global warming, and local government regulations. Trade ministers will meet for a five-day business forum November 17-21, Monday through Friday, in Miami, FL.

This event was one in a series coordinated over the Internet using webpages, email, and list servers. The Fort Lauderdale rally was sponsored by MoonPath CUUPS (Covenant of Unitarian Universalist Pagans) and Co-Sponsored by the Everglades Moon Local Council of the Covenant of the Goddess. We attracted 120+  members from the local activist and also Pagan communities.
The press was invited to attend, so we expected reporters and cameras to be among us. Both Channel 7 and 10 showed up, complete with TV trucks for live evening links. Our goal was to raise more awareness in Broward County so folks will take more interest in the trade ministers meeting in Miami November 17-21, 2003, and travel south to make their voices heard.

Inside TV Truck

Citizens of Broward County imaging a Hadrian's Wall has been built across the Broward/Dade County Line and do not venture south without a very good reason. Thus, Starhawk is holding a Rally in Broward.

It was a good idea to bring a folding chair or blanket. We were meeting outside at the fire circle behind the church building.
